How do we automate the system beep with 2.6.X kernels?

Now that the system beep (Ctrl-G) is off by default, how does one get it automatically installed through the boot process?

I imagine it's an alias definition in /etc/modprobe.conf, but what's the correct alias? The kernel docs don't seem to be very helpful on this subject saying only (as far as I can find):

devices.txt: 128 = /dev/beep Fancy beep device
