A common issue with modern soundcards is that they are only happy clocked at 
48kHz.  If your audio is coming in at 44.1kHz because that's all your player 
app knows how to handle, it sounds wrong, scratchy, tinny, but still 
understandable.

If you have mplayer for example, you can check to see if this is the 
problem...

mplayer -ao alsa1x -af resample=48000 myfile.mp3

There is a way to set alsa to autoresample transparently, I read about it in 
the tips section at fedoranews.org I think, but I didn't try it.
