Any advantage to downloading newly released isos if using FC3RC5

Of course not, that's why I was asking.
I couldn't figure it out in the yum configuration but in the rhn/sources 
I found the lines and changed them as follows:

yum fedora-core-3

http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/3/$ARCH/

yum-mirror fedora-core-3

I tried that and it's still not working, probably because the servers 
are being hammered right now.
