I had to resort to using this option on a laptop when I installed 
FC3 but once the installation was complete I could pull the option 
back out, power down for a few minutes, and then boot back into FC3 
with 16bit depth and DRI enabled.  It's been running fine in this 
mode ever since.  This is pretty much the same as it's been on this 
system ever since part way into the changes the Xorg folks were 
making during FC3T1, if time frames are any help.  If I were a 
betting man, my money would be on some kind of hardware 
initialization problem.
