No sound on laptop, any progress?

Yep.

The solution is to add snd-intel8x0m to /etc/hotplug/blacklist so that
it isn't treated as a USB hotplug device. 
 
 Specifically: 
 1) Add snd-intel8x0m to /etc/hotplug/blacklist and rebooted. 
 2) KDE->ControlCenter->Sound & Multimedia-> Sound System- 
 >Enable. Leave everything as default. 
 3) KDE->System Settings->Soundcard Detection. It detected 
 my soundcard and it has worked ever since. 
 
 If you have further trouble, check kmix and see that your input and
output levels are set correctly. If you still have trouble, which I
doubt you will, start using the alsa graphical tools, ie alsa-mix, etc
to see where things are set.

Please tell us if you installed FC3 fresh or with an update and what
from.
