Hi,
I don't know for sure what is the matter, but I would recommend you
rebuild your initrd the ext3 module has to be loaded from the initial
ram disk since its needed before the root file system is mounted
boot to the 541 kernel and as root
cd /boot
mv initrd-2.6.8-1.603.img initrd-2.6.8-1.603.bad.img
mkinitrd initrd-2.6.8-1.603.img 2.6.8-1.603
and
mv initrd-2.6.8-1.598.img initrd-2.6.8-1.598.bad.img
mkinitrd initrd-2.6.8-1.598.img 2.6.8-1.598
And see how that works.
No problem with 603 or 598 here.
