as seen in:
rpm -q --changelog system-config-packages|head

which kernel are you using at the moment?
which version of hal?

if you are running kernel 2.6.8-1.624 you might want to boot into  an
older kernel like -610 and see if things work better. This might be a
symptom of a deeper hal problem exposed by the newest kernel and not
something inside the s-c-packages codebase itself. Dropping back to a
kernel older than -624 would test.
