yumming up down to for loop

I'm having so much trouble getting updated with yum that I've now
resorted to marching lists of updates produced by yum thru a for loop
where I can cancel errors and go on to next.

A big slowdown is rereading the repmod.xml data (or what ever) that is
read at the start of each update.

I'm using a for loop with:
    yum -y update $pkg
and slowly getting quite a few updated. Since the repo is on my
internal lan its not costing too much bandwidth but still, someway to
save that reparse on each loop would really speed it up.
