Sorry Seth, I moved on and that problem is gone. What I did was move to the
redhat repo, it tried to download a new primary.xml.gz but the download
aborted partway the first time.... (note it wrongly jumped to 100%)...

primary.xml.gz            100% |=========================| 144 kB    02:01

      <rpm:entry name="perl(

      <rpm:entry name="perl(

I tried again and this time it succeeded, downloaded some stuff and then

I already saw someone met this and updated yum to get around it. So I did

[root at fastcat ~]# yum update yum

So that was good.

The I got this on the next yum update
....
Error: xorg-x11-font-utils conflicts:  xorg-x11-base-fonts<= 6.7.99.903-3

So I did this...

[root at fastcat ~]# yum --exclude=xorg-x11-font-utils update

... and that seems to have got me working, all the non-excluded packages are
installing now.

BTW despite these complicated steps the new yum is obviously a major advance
over the old one, keep up the good work.
