If that is true, maybe you could point me to instructions that 
don't include that step.

Every bugzilla, howto and even the GRUB documentation suggested 
it was required.

I was running from a recue disc because the machine wouldn't boot 
and kept giving me "Error 15". At the time there were many bugzilla 
entries open on that issue.
