kernel modules are linked into the kernel at runtime and are fully
fledged members of the running kernel. They thus can do all the things
the "real" kernel can, including all damage and crashing, and all
security mistakes. 
(eg a kernel module can make any user root if it wants to. some binary
modules are rumored to have backdoors for that ;)
