changes broken?

some change yesterday (installed with kernel 1502) broke X ... i can
boot into level 3 and login ... but booting into graphical/X is broken.

also, all smp kernels since 1287 have resulted in hung processes ...
which require rebooting to clear. dell poweredge 2400 with two 1ghz
processers, 1gbyte memory, raid controller with six scsi disks. hang
appears to be somewhat network related ... occurs anytime from somewhere
in device initialization thru being able to run applications for several
hrs. once hang appears,

all non-smp 13xx & 14xx kernels have worked (modulo a couple really
broken kernels) w/o problem.

1502 & 1504 (yesterday & today) smp kernels have consistently hung just
after initializing two ethernet cards. non-smp 1502 & 1504 boot & run
fine (modulo X being broken and booting to level 3).
