process hangs on 13xx smp kernels

No kernel messages in /var/log/messages. 

In fact, there's NOTHING in /var/log/messages at all from the smp boot.  
It's as if syslog never ran.

Timestamps jump directly from the non-smp reboot prior to the smp test 
directly to the non-smp startup AFTER the smp test boot.

exec-shield=0 makes no difference at all.
