process hangs on 13xx smp kernels (oops spoke a little too soon)

oops, spoke a little too soon. x seems to be doing better ... but 
something hung in the network stack ... and then anything attempting to 
do tcp/ip would hang. i could kill processes and do other things  (which 
wasn't happening when x was hanging) ... mozilla tabs trying to do 
network urls hung ... but basic mozilla was still live (aka toolbar 
worked, etc). finally rebooted to smp kernel 1276 and problem went away.
