Because apple thinks of itself has a hardware company and uses its
aggressively successful and well tailored marketing campaign around
the usability of its operating system to drive a specific demographic
towards buying its branded hardware at a premium. Not only is it
easier to just support their own hardware.. but it also re-enforces
apple's brand in the hardware marketplace.
