My temporary way of getting around this is to manually edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf 
and remove the "1680x1050" entry ... everything looks OK then.

I am glad to see 1680x1050 supported (for my wide screen laptop) but the 
aspect ratio for 1600x1200 and 1680x1050 are very different.

The "proper" way to fix this is to only list those entries which correspond 
with the aspect ratio of the display/monitor you have but ... that might be 
very difficult to do on a reliable basis.
