First guess would be compiler. Although there is a saying that "the first
error in blaming the compiler is blaming the compiler" gcc 4.0 is fairly new
so it could be a compiler problem.

Try with optimisation disabled, if that works turn on -Wall and also check for
any uninitialised or mis-typed variables because gcc4 will produce different
results for those errors sometimes.
