Prior to the above, I had to remove the link (initially renamed)
/etc/X11/X. It was pointing to X11R6. Starting xfs, then allowed me to
run system-config-display.
After sending the above message, I replaced /etc/X11/fs/config with the
config.rpmnew in the same directory. Restarting xfs, I was able to
startx for my user account and get firefox to run.
So far, I can't get gdm to start any sessions (Gnome or KDE) for my user
account except the failsafe terminal. Gdm will, however, start root's
account. Root gets a warning "Error activating XKB configuration."
