Just run fc-cache -f, should fix it for most. That's why reinstalling 
the fontconfig package would help, but that's overkill.

I also found that having an "empty" font path (i.e. nothing but 
fonts.cache-2, fonts.dir and fonts.scale) seemed to cause me a problem.
