gnome saved sessions messed up

I set session preferences to save the state at logout. I 
have workspaces set up 2x2. Until yesterday, I had various 
terminal windows in each of the workspaces.

Now all the terminal windows are in workspace 1. I've tried 
moving them and selecting save on exit, but no luck.

Also (related?), when the mouse cursor is directly over the 
desktop it shows the circular busy signal.

All within the past two days.

Any magic I need to try??
