no the installer should only look in /lib/modules/<version> for the
current kernel sources. And it does afaik

Any kernel module build thing that doesn't look there for the current
headers is so terminally broken that you also wouldn't want to run the
rest of the software ;)

such a link exists, in /lib/modules/<version>/
