It looks like gnome-settings-daemon is the thing really
doing the work. I may be able to just run it without
getting a gui popup, but it also does a zillion other
things to screw around with me (which is one of the reasons
I hate gnome).

I'll have to strace it and follow the breadcrumbs back to
the source and see if I can squelch everything except the
font tweaking :-).
