Just to close this out, I rebuilt /dev/md1 from within a non-raid non-LV
incarnation of FC6, restored the VG, and started from scratch. No
problems any longer, but cannot debug the original issue as whatever was
causing /dev/md1 to be seen as foreign no longer exists.
