Hi again,

Michal Jaegermann suggested I'd take a look at the
Preferences->Keyboard, and although nothing there seemed to fix my
problem, it gave me an idea to try. For the longest time, my
/etc/X11/xorg.conf has had this setting:

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "Keyboard0"
        Driver "kbd"
        Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
        Option "XkbLayout" "us"
        Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:nocaps"
EndSection

(who uses CAPS-lock, right?). This has worked great for a long, long
time. Changing the above to:

        Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:swapcaps"

solves the problem I had (with <CTRL>-_ not working). This is obviously
a workable solution, but I would have preferred to keep "ctrl:nocaps" if
possible. Is there something in Gnome that "conflicts" with this? In the
Prefs->Keyboard, it shows the correct setting for either of the above
xorg.conf settings, but only "ctrl:swapcaps" works well.

Thanks!
