problems with most recent fc5 (2187) maint.?

i may have found problem with kernel-smp-2.6.17-1.2187_FC5 not mounting other than root filesystem and failing to bring up networking correctly ("mount -a" after logon mounts the rest of the system, and deactivate/activate network interfaces brings things up correctly). this is dell 2400 dual 1ghz processors with 1gbyte memory

i had selinux temporarily set to permissive (for completely unrelated reasons) when doing the install and then switched back to enforcing. during 2187 boot there are some messages about some file operation failed because of permissions.

just tried same smp kernel on dell 8100 3.4ghz processor with hyperthreading enabled. it fails to initialize with two processors. dropping back to smp kernel 2174 correctly initializes for two processors.
