trying to resize emacs window locks up desktop

  i didn't immediately see a bugzilla entry for this:  i can start an
emacs editor window and work there without any problem, but the
instant i try to resize that window, my entire desktop locks up, and i
need to Ctrl-Alt-BS to kill it.

   at other times, simply starting emacs causes the same lockup.
thoughts?

p.s.  starting emacs produces a warning that's already been logged in
bugzilla -- missing gnomebreakpad shared library.
