hi
tried to update my rawhide box.

"yum install kernel" has installed kernel 2.6.23-0.115.rc3.git1.fc8
without errors and i can see the related entries under /boot and in
grub.conf.

so far so good.

if i boot the box (rawhide is chain loaded) i see in grub's graphical
menu the aged entries

- 2.6.23-0.74.rc2.git1.fc8 *and*
- 2.6.23-0.73.rc2.git1.fc8

but no 2.6.23-0.115.rc3.git1.fc8 lines
and kernel 73 was deleted by the above "yum install kernel" !

1st thought: grub has a problem

tried grub-install /dev/sda3 (3 is correct !)
turns out:
The file /boot/grub/stage2 not read correctly

next try
rpm -qf /boot/grub/stage2
turns out:
file /boot/grub/stage2 is not owned by any package
verified under f7: the same.

hhhmmm. not correct and not owned....
btw. is fedora hardened against the so called "bundestrojaner" ?
a piece of software from our government to investigate citizens, ...,
cause we are all potential terrorists.
i'm sure cocaine should be forbidden for governments officials !

info/hints:
- box has 2 sata and 1 pata disk(s)
- sda holds the mbr and f7;
from there rawhide get chain loaded, which resides on the pata disk
(3rd partition).
- under f7 the 1st sata disk is seen as sda and the pata disk is seen as
sdc. (2cd sata disk == sdb)
- under f8 the pata disk is known as sda and the 1st sata (f7-sda) is
known as sdb. (2cd sata disk == sdc).

worried ?
:)
last point is the default bios layout !

questions:
where else - apart form /boot and grub.conf - does a kernel
install/update write ?
