After he read in archives recent remarks about hal behaviour Ronald
Warsow called to my attention that Fedora 7 has the following file:

/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/99-redhat-storage-policy-fixed-drives.fdi

This policy file vanished from F8 and rawhide.  If you will copy
that file from some F7 system to a subdirectory of /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/,
an existing one or new of your making, and restart hal, then various
things about fixed drives start to conduct themselves in quite a bit
saner manner.
