sound problems, login works from level 3 no gdm

Dear all,

Upon booting to newer released kernel 

[olivares at localhost ~]$ uname -iprm
2.6.24-0.115.rc5.git5.fc9 i686 athlon i386

Sound does not work, I tried to use alsamixer, as of a
few updates ago, sound came back :), now it went
backwards :(.  

I typed

GDM still does not work, INIT: error message, but at
least login works from level 3 without enforcing=0
starting parameter.
