It looks like the first time soffice runs it calls
/usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/javaldx and it calls
/usr/bin/gij -classpath /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program JREProperties
Which seems to hang or never return.
Seems like if you kill gij then
.openoffice.org2.0/user/config/javasettings_Linux_x86.xml gets created.
Once .openoffice.org2.0 gets created it seems to run fine.
I renamed .openoffice.org2.0 and it breaks again.

# ./javaldx -h
javaldx is necessary to make Java work on some UNIX platforms. It prints a
string to std out that consists of directories which have to be included
into the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable. The setting of the variable usually occurs
in a shell script that runs javaldx.
The directories are from the chosen java installation.
Options are:
--help or -h
# ps -ef|grep 2959

/usr/lib/openoffice.org/program JREProperties
