Yes, I was using atrpms.net REPO.

yum install only picks up ipw3945-kmdl-2.6.18-1.2869.fc6.x86_64

I would expect 2895.

You also have to modify modprobe.conf manually:

install ipw3945 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ipw3945 ; sleep
0.5 ; /sbin/ipw3945d --quiet
remove ipw3945 /sbin/ipw3945d --kill ; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove
ipw3945
