gdm hangs in runlevel 5

and add comments/observations.  I get the respawn message every time, however i press enter login and type startx.  I also removed xorg.conf on the laptop because touchpad did not work, removing xorg.conf did the trick thanks to you and others that have mentioned this.  Without your help, running rawhide would be more painful than what it really is :)
