You should get some error messages which explain what is the
problem.  One possibility is that some package script is failing.
In such case

       rpm -e --noscripts avahi-<....>

Or maybe you need to use '--nodeps' if you still have dependencies
which prevent that removal. In any case 'rpm --help | less' should
give you ideas.

Try to run 'package-cleanup --orphans' to see what leftovers you
still have.

You can also do 'rpm -e -vv ....' and watch pretty closesly what
is happening.
