no kernal after 2.6.23.1-23 boots

Perhaps you hit the maximum mount count for that partition,
and a forced check happened.

Nothing related to disks has changed in the kernel for
a few weeks (and even that last change was just a module
parameter rename).  Before that.. ages ago.
