Oh, that's an interesting alternative to what I've been trying to do,
thanks. I guess I never noticed that that's there. Since I'm using
gnome, I should be using its screensaver.

xautolock is an old X program that runs in the background; after a
customizable period of inactivity, it executes a command. I was using
it run my "switch to VT7/gdm" script. It may not be necessary if I
can use your suggestion.
