You may also want to check the dimension reported by 'xdpyinfo'; try
something like 'xdpyinfo | grep dim'.  On my system, xdpyinfo
erroneously reports this:

  dimensions:    1920x1024 pixels (300x230 millimeters)
instead of
  dimensions:    1280x1024 pixels (300x230 millimeters)

Fixing this with 'xrandr --size 1280x1024' before starting firefox
fixes this for me.
