Backspace Hell

I need to have the backspace key send a backspace character
in order to work with other systems which expect the backspace
key to work correctly.

The last time I battled this cruftiness there were several ways
to get Xterm to send a backspace, none of which actually
worked.

Why does Linux insist on violating the ASCII definition of
the backspace key? This is the sort of standards aberration
I'd expect from Steve Jobs.
