Apparently not? or not that I know of.  I do an ls /etc/nsswitch.conf and I get 

[olivares at riohigh ~]$ ls /etc/nsswitch.conf -l 
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1696 2004-09-22 20:17 /etc/nsswitch.conf
[olivares at riohigh ~]$
