Did you look at access_log on the *server*?  You want to see some GET
actiosn for the PPDs.

That will be in error_log, not access_log, and those messages are
harmless.

Take a look at the network traffic while the GTK+ print dialog is being
displayed.  Are connections being made to the network CUPS server on
port 631?  These are in HTTP -- what's the status code?  Does a PPD come
back? etc
