You might be effected by the problem that I have with the ati driver.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=427000
Boot to runlevel 3 and try to start X as a regular user. You should be
in a state which you are seeing with runlevel 5. You need to be in
runevel 3 in order to get past gdm where it also locks up and prevents
xorg from writing out a log file.
Kill the machine or try to ssh into it booting into runlevel 3 again,
Copy the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log over somewhere and then edit your
/etc/xorg.conf file and change the driver to vesa and afterward as a
regular user run startx again and observe the content of your saved log
file for X.
If you are seeing the same problem, add the information to the bug
report above. I am hoping for another victim to prove repeatability.
According to previous replies, the error is input but effects the ati
driver somehow.
