Sure it didn't tell you that it couldn't be written to, but a reboot had
to happen or something? I've seen that when trying to change order or
whatever.

Oh yes, quite sure. And as I mentioned, there is no /etc/modprobe.conf file
when I do an ls on the /etc location.
