<snicker> Actually, this discussion made me wonder if it's imporved to
the point where it doesn't break non-standard, e.g., console or fluxbox
sound, so with a bit of trepidation, I reinstalled
alsa-pulseaudio-plugins and sound still worked. It got me curious
enough to try a new fresh install to see what happens if you don't
boot into Gnome.
Which brought up a new issue, NFS installs, but that's for my next post.

(I don't have the answer yet, since I'm trying to get this done before
we leave for the dinner--which reminds me, HAPPY HOLIDAYS to those of
you who celebrate. And despite all our grouching, many thanks to all
he developers).
