pppd and pppoe-discovery were present without rp-pppoe or pppoe. The
latter did detect the access concentrator.
But network manager wanted rp-pppoe

It is compulsory to use a username + passwd for ADSL in most parts of India.
The largest broad band service provider DataOne (BSNL) requires it
