ath9k dead periods

Wooops, I should have added that.  I never use NetworkManager in Fedora,
where I do in Ubuntu based systems.  

(This is because Fedora is where I do most of my actual work, whereas
with Ubuntu, it's usually just curiosity to see what they're doing these
days.)

So, it's certainly possible that NM, rather than a kernel or system
aspect, is the culprint.  Seems there should be some pun to make about
Gnomes and gremlins, but I'm too tired.
