Ok - my results are not so good.

I'm running 2.6.32 (git from about 2 days ago) and nouveau also from git
(also 2 days ago). My nv card is a 8800gts.

Upgraded from the repo. After restarting X (telinit 3 && telinit 5) I
lost both the X display, and any console access. XDMCP and ssh worked,
so all was not lost.

There were no error messages in any log. Reading logs, everything should
have been fine. The X log showed the screen detected - in fact, the
working log is indistinguishable from the non-working log.

I tried to restore console access by rmmod fbcon & rmmod -f nouveau. The
subsequent modprobe nouveau hung (expected, I suppose). Eventually, I
gave up and rebooted. The console sprung to life when the modprobe
nouveau was killed during the reboot.

When I rebooted, I got a normal login screen. I logged in and got a
desktop - but no toolbars, etc. Just my previously opened terminal
windows. I moved one of them slightly and the screen behind it not fill
in right away.. took about 5 seconds. Then X quit and restarted.
Subsequently, I was unable to log in - X just quit.

I'm attaching the xorg log files with the segfault.
I also see a GPU lockup in dmseg - attaching that as well (this is the
reboot after installation of the new xorg).
Lastly, I'm attaching the old dmesg (pre reboot) for comparison.

I've now downgraded and all is back to normal.
