Comment #3 in there says "The cause of the original problem is that
gallery2 is trying to replace a directory with a symlink".

Assuming than an offending directory is really used only by gallery2
then something like that in a %pre script of a replacement package
should work (not really deeply tested):
if [ ! -h /offending/directory -a -d /offending/directory ] ; then
rm -rf /offending/directory
fi
and then cpio should not have problems. Only that means that if a
transaction will be not completed then you may be left with a damage
(but this is always an issue).
The trouble is compouded by yum which does first an installation of
a new package and a cleanup phase only later.
