Ah, yes, but shouldn't "ls -l" show a "+" as the last character of
the permissions if ACLs are in use?  Jonathan's list doesn't show
them, so it ma be that the ACLs aren't set.

Johnathan, what does "getfacl /dev/snd/*" show?  Is the user the
desktop is running as shown in a "user::" line?
