That seems to be correct--it's similar to a VMware appliance, that is, a
Live CD is complete O/S in itself so will require the proper filesystem.
(Hrrm, bad analogy, I think, but hopefully, it makes it a bit clearer.)

much concern about using up the drive as it was in slowing down an
already very slow write speed. (4 MB/S or so, IIRC).

What happens, or at least, was happening, was that in an effort to keep
the price point down, they would use lower quality SSDs.

My own Asus 1000HE is a spinning hard drive type, but from what I saw
while deciding what to get, I think their larger SSD models would have a
4 gig system SSD, that was fast, and a 16 GB SSD that was slow as the
Aspire's was slow.

So, if the 2 GB is all there is, I suspect it's one of the fast ones.

Also, as to your question, remember, this whole discussion is about the
live CD. You can use various and sundry filesystems if you use the DVD
or CD sets. (There's a sticky on Fedora Forums about installing the DVD
from a USB, assuming, in this case, that you have a second computer, as
the DVD won't fit on 2 GBs.
