Desktop effects: solid white screen

OK, I put "LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1" in my exports, and logged out/in.

[tbl at tlondon ~]$ printenv | grep GL
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1
[tbl at tlondon ~]$

Trying to enable compiz via System->Preferences->Desktop Effects fails.

But immediately starting it manually works:

[tbl at tlondon ~]$ gtk-window-decorator --replace&
[1] 6326
[tbl at tlondon ~]$ compiz --replace glib gconf&
[2] 6327
[tbl at tlondon ~]$ compiz (video) - Warn: No 8 bit GLX pixmap format,
disabling YV12 image format
