is there an issue with USB-serial converter support?

keep in mind that, at least from what i've seen, i'm not getting any
complaints from anything when i plug in the converter.
/var/log/messages shows nothing out of the ordinary, i simply get junk
in my minicom session.
using a targus port replicator with a built in converter works fine,
it's just that prolific technology converter that seems to cause
grief. i may buy another brand to see if that makes any difference.

p.s. both solutions require the usbserial module, but the targus uses
the mct_u232 on top of that, while the PL converter uses pl2303. if
you have a device that uses the pl2303 module, i'd be interested in
knowing if that works.
